NCSU grad wins Beard essay endowment Education

Raleigh local Rachel Wharton won the nations top respect in food journalism, a James Beard Foundation award.

Wharton was respected Sunday at a two-day annual eventuality in New York City that honors chefs, cookbook authors, writers and others continuous to the culinary arts.

Wharton won for her Back of the House columns that crop up in Edible Brooklyn and Edible Manhattan. Wharton is emissary editor of the publications. She is the initial bard for any Edible magazine, informal food publications with small staffs, to win a James Beard award.

Wharton describes the mainstay as a love minute to a restaurant. She tries to communicate the scene, the crowd, the owners, so you know what the similar to to eat there prior to you travel by the door.

Wharton, 37, attended Broughton High School and graduated from N.C. State University. Her initial pursuit was essay for N.C. Sea Grants magazine. Ten years ago, she changed to New York.

On Monday, cook Sean Brock kick out chefs Andrea Reusing of Lantern and Bill Smith of Crooks Corner, both in Chapel Hill, to win most appropriate cook in the Southeast. Brock is the cook at McCradys in Charleston, S.C.

This was Smiths second assignment and Reusings first.

James Beard was a culinary pioneer, one of the initial radio chefs and a cookbook writer who championed informal American cuisine.
